Dr. David Wangombe trains Deans and Vice-Chancellors on Transformative Leadership

Dr. David Wangombe, Dean School of Management and Commerce (SMC), trained Deans and Vice-Chancellors of African Universities in Leadership and Governance at Lilongwe, Malawi.

The University Leaders came together under the sponsorship of Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) which is a member–based consortium of 66 Universities in 26 countries in Africa.

RUFORUM’s purpose is to transform the mode of leadership, teaching, training, research and outreach in African Universities Faculties/Colleges of Agriculture and related sciences. The body’s specific thrust is to work with the members to strengthen leadership and management skills of university leaders.

Dr. Wangombe was a key trainer on a module seeking to develop Transformative Leadership in universities. “It has observed that most University Leaders take up their respective positions without any formal training in Management and Leadership. Hence there is need for a structured and formal programme to equip such leaders with necessary skills” Dr. Wangombe noted.

The training, which took a case-study approach, mainly focused on governance and building a winning strategy in universities.  A transformational leader should be in a position to bring about significant change in followers and the organisation, as well as cultivate followers to be leaders.

Dr. Wangombe emphasised the importance of building a sustainable leadership process. He set out the requirements of a leadership that works. The training proved to be informative and enlightening.
