First Year Parents Seminar

Parents at a recent seminar

Strathmore University delightfully hosted first year students’ parents for a seminar in the month of September, 2014. The seminar was organized for parents of students taking the Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Hospitality Management and Bachelor of Tourism Management courses.


A huge turnout was witnessed as the parents were taken through various sessions on student life at the university. In her opening remarks, Family Network International representative, Margaret Mucheru, took the parents through a session on how to support students in their transition from high school through to university. She encouraged parents to be positive and have a listening ear to the students’ needs. She also encouraged them to demand accountability and to be clear on their expectations of the child’s performance. In addition to these, Margaret also asked the parents to regularly check with the school on the development of their children.


Prof. Izael Da Silva, Strathmore University Deputy - Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), gave a presentation on the philosophy of the school’s education. He emphasized on the university’s commitment to give students an all-round education, where students are able to develop in all facets of their lives. He also explained the need for students to receive mentorship as part of having a conducive learning environment through their university life.


In conclusion, Ms. Roseline Lubulellah, School Manager - School of Management and Commerce (SMC), took the parents through an overview of the Bachelor of Commerce program. She also informed them of the exam requirements, specifically highlighting on attendance. She briefed them on the importance of students attending at least two thirds of the lectures so as to be eligible to sit for the examinations. Finally she informed the new parents on the fee rebate policy which includes; students getting discounts based on exemplary performance and the family rebate where students receive discounts if they have a sibling(s) taking a course at the university.
