SU awards first PhD!

Mrs Beatrice Dimba, a lecturer in the Faculty of Commerce is the first person to be awarded a PhD by the University. A mother of six children and nine grand-children was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Management at the 2010 graduation ceremony held on 25th June.


Her son Joseph Dimba was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the event.


Dr Dimba joined then Strathmore College as part of Kianda College staff when the two institutions merged in 1993. She started teaching at Kianda College in 1983. The title of her thesis was: ‘The Influence of Employee Cultural Orientations on the Relationship between Strategic Human Resource Management Practices and the Performance of Large Foreign Multinational Manufacturing Organizations in Kenya'.


A total of 445 students graduated with diplomas, bachelors, and master's degrees. The graduands were drawn from the Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Commerce, Institute of Humanities Education, and Development Studies and the Business School.


In a speech read on his behalf by Fr Peter Castiella, the University Pro-Chancellor Monsignor Albert Pampillon urged the graduands to go out and impart the knowledge they have acquired in others. He said development not depends on the knowledge people acquire but also on how they put that knowledge to use.


The Vice Chancellor Prof John Odhiambo said the graduates should have a greater desire to learn. He told the graduates to make true the transformation wave they have taken up from Strathmore to the rest of the continent.


There were special awards given to individual students who had been outstanding in certain areas. Shillah Sintoyia, a Bachelor of Commerce graduate got the Community Outreach Program (COP) award. This is an award given to outstanding individuals for their service in the University's Outreach Program.


Lilian Aura (BCOM) and Kenneth Nyongesa (BBIT) got the sports awards while Yvonne Omenya (BCOM) and Farah Mohammed (BBIT) got the Deans' awards from the Faculty of Commerce and Faculty of Information Technology respectively.
